Why Hamas Might Be Happy If the Palestinian Authority Takes Over Gaza
Beware Hizballah-fication.
On Tuesday March 4, Egypt plans to host an emergency summit of the Arab League to discuss the fate of the Gaza Strip, and to try to present an alternative to Donald Trump’s proposal to remove the population prior to reconstruction. Meanwhile, the U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will be in the Middle East soon to try to broker an extension of the current cease-fire deal—with the mediation of Egypt and Qatar—which will likely entail discussions of postwar plans for Gaza. One possibility, long favored by Egypt, is to get Hamas to assent to the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Strip. Meir Ben-Shabbat explains that this might be exactly what Hamas wants:
