When Early Zionists Revived Shavuot’s Agricultural Character

The holiday of Shavuot, which begins tonight, is most associated in Jewish tradition with the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. But it in the Torah itself it is described only as first-fruits festival, taking place when the wheat crop is fully grown and the harvest season is about the begin in earnest. Early Zionists tried to revive this aspect of the holiday, as documented in a collection of photographs recently released by the Jewish National Fund. JNS reports:
