The Threat to Nigerian Christians

Not sporadic violence, but religious war.

On October 31, the White House designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern,” due to brutal attacks by Islamists on the Christian population—which have become increasingly severe. Fighting has also erupted in the northeastern part of the country between Boko Haram, the dominant jihadist group in West Africa, and the local branch of Islamic State. There have even been naval battles between the two terrorist organizations on Lake Chad, which borders Niger, Cameroon, and Chad, as well as Nigeria. Meanwhile, Russia and other anti-Western powers have been trying to expand their influence in the region.
