Although Jews have vanished almost completely from Yemen, it was until recently home to one of the Diaspora’s oldest Jewish communities, with its own distinctive customs and traditions. Yet, while Yemenite Jews were known for their piety, even those deeply familiar with rabbinic texts are unlikely to be able to name more than one or two Yemenite sages. Adena Tanenbaum, in conversation with J.J. Kimche, provides an overview of the country’s Jewish history, and explains how its rabbis cultivated a unique genre of philosophical midrash.
