The Last-Ditch Efforts to Save Hungarian Jews from Auschwitz

Untold stories of heroism.

In October 1944, Hungary dropped its alliance with Adolf Hitler and negotiated a separate peace with the Allies. Germany promptly decided to invade rather than lose a crucial ally, and placed the fascist Arrow Cross party in charge of a puppet government. Until then, most Hungarian Jews had survived, subjected to many horrors but not to systematic slaughter. That changed with the Nazi invasion, and in the next few months tens of thousands of Hungarians Jews were murdered at Auschwitz.
