The Hidden Radicalism of Brooklyn’s Haredi Existentialist Rabbi

Yitzchak Hutner.

Although little known outside of Orthodox circles, Rabbi Yitzchak Hutner is recognized among America Haredim as one of the most profound theologians of the 20th century. Born in hasidic Warsaw in 1906, he studied at a distinguished non-hasidic (“Lithuanian”) yeshiva before spending several years in Ottoman Palestine and then settling in Brooklyn. David Bashevkin provides a brief biography of Hutner before delving into his thought in conversation with Alon Shalev. Shalev points to the influence of European existentialism on Hutner’s thought, and Hutner’s efforts to conceal his most radical ideas within his writings. (Audio, 108 minutes.)
