Could U.S. Marines Reopen the Strait of Hormuz?

The strategic calculations behind a possible ground campaign.

The past several days have seen conflicting reports on Iranian attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint in the Persian Gulf, and possible efforts to keep them open on the part of the U.S. and its allies. The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, over 2,000 strong, is expected to arrive in the region on Friday, and the 11th will join them in a few weeks. The Pentagon is also planning to dispatch the 82nd Airborne Division.
