Burnt Offerings Are a Reminder That Humans, Too, Are Created Beings

The antithesis of idolatry.

Yesterday, those following the daily regimen of Talmud study known as daf yomi completed Tractate Z’vahim, which deals with the laws of animal sacrifice: which offerings are required under which circumstances, where in the Temple courtyard they must be slaughtered, the ritual application of their blood, and where and how their meat may be eaten. This complex subject has little relevance to today’s Jews, as animal sacrifice was abandoned with the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, even if the Orthodox still pray for its reinstitution.
