Without Political Authority or Miracles, Amos Used Language to Win Over the Hearts of Israel

“But let justice run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.”

Unlike Moses or Samuel, the prophet Amos never attained a position of political leadership. And unlike Elijah or Elisha, he did not perform miracles or exercise personal charisma. Instead, argues Yitzchak Etshalom in his recent book on this biblical figure thought to have lived in the 8th century BCE, he had to win people over with the power of his words alone—thus serving as a model for Jeremiah and other later figures. Etshalom discusses Amos’s message, context, and use of language in conversation with Michael Morales. (Audio, 24 minutes.)
