Ruth Wisse has said many times, in the pages of Mosaic and elsewhere, that the function of anti-Semitism is to point an accusing finger at Jews, making it possible to ignore a given society’s own problems or wrongdoings. Yesterday, a respected Israeli civic organization released a thorough, 300-page report documenting the “sexual terror” that, it concluded, was “systematic, widespread, and integral to the October 7 attacks and their aftermath.” The veteran New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, evidently aware of the imminent release of this report, seized the opportunity to point the accusing finger at Israel, and charge it with the very same crimes that its people had suffered. As David Lange writes:
Hey, look, a squirrel!
