As the press and American diplomats try to make sense of the Islamic Republic, it’s worth recalling how often both have failed terribly in doing so. Ze’ev Maghen, in his masterful 2022 essay “How Iran Thinks,” bluntly summed up the problem by borrowing a phrase from the 1992 election: “it’s religion, stupid.”
