Today’s newsletter began with a discussion of the parlous effects of digital technology on young people, but it’s abundantly clear that today’s Internet, and especially social media, has had dire effects on adults as well. Take the ease of public shaming, whereby a joke in poor taste, or a series of tweets about teaching a child to use a can opener, can lead to a person being harassed, shunned, or even fired from a job.
