Deriving Jewish thought from Scripture.
In his recent book Jewish Theology Unbound, James A. Diamond seeks to refute the claim—made both by defenders and critics of Judaism—that theology is essentially foreign to the Jewish religion; he does so by turning to Scripture itself, offering novel readings of certain pregnant passages. Diamond discusses his book with Dru Johnson, a Christian scholar of the Hebrew Bible, in a conversation that also touches on his own intellectual formation, his experiences teaching the Holocaust to undergraduates, and other topics. (Audio, 61 minutes. An extract from Diamond’s book can be read here.)
