Zishe Breitbart, the “second Samson.”
In the early 1920s, one of the most popular Jewish celebrities was Zishe Breitbart, who traveled Europe and America with a German circus performing such feats of strength as bending iron bars with his bare hands and holding up cars filled with people. Born in a Polish shtetl to a blacksmith in 1893, Breitbart remained a proud and committed Jew and Zionist, who gave generously to Jewish institutions and promoted Jewish sports groups. Yehuda Geberer, who discovered the so-called “second Samson” while studying the writings of Rabbi Yeruchom Levovitz (1873-1936), describes his life. (Audio, 34 minutes.)
