What Is Turkey Up to in Africa?

And why it matters.

Earlier this week, deliveries of Egyptian military aid arrived in Somalia, and Cairo is reportedly planning to send 10,000 soldiers there, thus involving itself in internal Somali conflicts while trying to counter Ethiopian influence. Turkey too has become increasingly involved in the Horn of Africa, as well as elsewhere in the continent—places where Islamic State and al-Qaeda are on the rise and where Russia, the U.S., and even Iran have significant interests. Since 1998, the number of Turkish embassies in Africa has grown from twelve to 44. Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak investigates Ankara’s efforts:
