Many Jews have a custom of studying the talmudic tractate known as Pirkei Avot (“Chapters of the Fathers”) throughout the summer months. Unlike all other tractates, this one contains no legal discussions, only maxims for students and teachers of Torah, rabbinic judges, and humans in general. In discussion with J.J. Kimche, Yair Furstenberg discusses the latest academic scholarship on this work and his own theories about its purpose, message, and relationship with Greek philosophy. (Audio, 66 minutes.)
