The War in Ukraine Has Given America’s Friends and Foes New Reasons to Get Nuclear Weapons

Iran is paying attention.

In 1994, Ukraine agreed to give up its nuclear weapons—placed there by its former Soviet rulers—in exchange for guarantees from Russia, the U.S., and the UK that its borders would remain inviolable. Twenty years later, Vladimir Putin violated those borders, invading and seizing territory, while America and Britain responded with mostly symbolic gestures. Ukraine is now fighting for its life.
