The Samaritans: Not Quite Jews, Definitely Not Anything Else

A biblical people.

Believing themselves descendants of members of the ten northern tribes of Israel who never went into exile, the Samaritans are (possibly) first mentioned as a distinct group in the book of Ezra. They revere the Torah, keep the Sabbath, and bring an annual paschal offering at Mount Gerizim, a sacred site where their Temple was once located. Steven Fine explains their history, beliefs, practices, and relationship with the Jewish people—or is it “the rest of the Jewish people”?—in conversation with Nachi Weinstein. (Audio, 52 minutes.)
