The Rabbi Who Escaped Soviet Uzbekistan to Build Up Jewish Miami

Sholom Lipskar, in memoriam.

Three years ago, Mosaic published an essay about the surprising vibrancy, and youth, of Jewish life in south Florida. One of the pioneers of this transformation, Rabbi Sholom Lipskar, died last week at the age of seventy-eight. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Lipskar was smuggled into Poland by his parents when he was only twenty days old in a suitcase. In 1969, Lipskar was sent to Miami by the then-Lubavitcher rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson:
