The Origins of the Talmudic Page Layout

The Bomberg press of Venice.

The distinctive format of the printed talmudic page, with the text in the center and commentaries and reference apparatus on the sides, has become so iconic as to have acquired near-sacred status. Yoel Finkelman explains the relatively recent origin of this layout, pioneered by the Christian printer Daniel Bomberg (d. 1549) whose press in Venice revolutionized the Jewish book.
