The Jerusalem Papyrus and Its Significance

The scholar who deciphered it speaks.

Recently obtained by the Israel Antiquities Authority, an ancient papyrus that may be the oldest Hebrew document mentioning Jerusalem has attracted great attention even as some experts have raised the possibility that it could be a forgery. Shmuel Aḥituv, who was one of the first scholars to examine the rare artifact, speaks about its brief text, what it implies, and why he thinks it authentic. (Interview by Eve Harrow.
