The current mess in the Middle East, notes Peter Berkowitz, stems in part from the persistent failure of the U.S. government to understand the region—a failure chronicled historically in Dennis Ross’s new book, Doomed to Succeed: The U.S.-Israel Relationship from Truman to Obama.
