Perhaps giving banned terrorist groups legal rights was a mistake.
Hamas was founded in 1987, but it was not until 2001 that the United Kingdom banned its military wing, and not until 2021 that it abandoned the fiction that the political wing was something wholly separate. Or, as Stephen Daisley puts it, “It took the British political class twenty years to establish a link between the Hamas department that calls for the Jews to be blown up and the department that does the blowing up.” Now, a British law firm has filed suit to challenge both designations on behalf of Mousa Abu Marzouk, Hamas’s Qatar-based foreign minister. Daisley writes:
