Spiritual Resistance in the Holocaust

And some pitfalls of historical research.

There is no doubt about the heroism of Jews who took up arms against the Nazis in Warsaw, Vilna, and other ghettos and concentration camps knowing they had almost no chance of surviving. Yet there were other forms of heroism demonstrated during the Shoah as well by those who, for instance, went to extraordinary lengths—defying the orders of the SS and their helpers—to gather for prayers, to observe religious rituals, and to study sacred texts. Shnayer Leiman discusses such cases, while also explaining some of the pitfalls of Holocaust research. (Interview by Reuven Brand. Audio, 57 minutes.)
