Monday was the 100th anniversary of the second performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida by the Palestine Opera in Tel Aviv, conducted and directed by Mordechai Golinkin. Born in Russia, Golinkin had settled in the Land of Israel in 1923 with the express purpose of bringing opera to the Yishuv. Martin Kramer describes a poster advertising the event:
