Visiting an American bookstore, Matti Friedman was struck by the sheer number of titles on Gaza. Then he read them, and realized that they share not so much an interest in this beleaguered strip of land, but in what he calls “Gazology,” a metaphysical obsession with Israeli evil. The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth, for instance, “argues for a special link between Israel and global environmental degradation.” Some are more self-indulgent:
