Medieval Jerusalem, City of Tolerance

Seven centuries of the ancient Jewish capital.

In his recent book, Jerusalem Falls, John Hosler chronicles the history of the ancient Jewish capital from the Persian conquest of 614 CE until the 13th century. Although he notes that the city violently changed hands numerous times during this 600-year-period, he believes that the “predominate theme of life in Jerusalem” during this time was toleration, as people of rival faiths learned to live together. It was in this way very different from other contemporary Near Eastern cities. Hosler discusses this and much else with Aaron MacLean. (Audio, 51 minutes.)
