How to Negotiate with Iran While Avoiding the Pitfalls of 2015

The U.S. must maintain constant military and economic pressure.

By May 2018, when the U.S. withdrew from the agreement to restrain Tehran’s nuclear program, it was already clear that this deal had failed to accomplish its stated goals. Nonetheless, the Biden administration has made clear that it desires to revive the deal. Amos Yadlin and Ebtesam al-Ketb argue that simply to return to the status quo ante would be dangerous. Instead, they call for an interim deal to halt the Iranian race to develop a bomb, followed by negotiation for a more permanent and effective agreement:
