Just as Ecclesiastes proclaims that there is a time to build and a time to destroy, and Nehemiah was engaged equally in both rebuilding the Jewish homeland and defending the Jews against their enemies, much of the task now before Israel involves destroying Hamas and Hizballah. In the West, especially among diplomats and experts, there is skepticism about this goal. The IDF, we are told, can defeat Hamas in military engagements, kill terrorists, and destroy tunnels, but it can never stamp the group out. Reuel Marc Gerecht is not so sure:
