Freedom of Speech Is Dying on Campus

Support for Israel, and traditional religion, are among the forbidden beliefs.

Responding to the orchestrated attack on the social scientist Charles Murray when he tried to give a talk at Middlebury College—an attack that left the professor who invited him seriously injured—Frank Bruni and Jonathan Haidt discuss the growing intolerance toward the free exchange of ideas at American universities. They cite, among other things, how students who support Israel have learned to “bite their tongues,” and how religious students are reluctant to reveal their beliefs to their classmates.
