What does Jeremiah mean by “burn[ing] their sons and daughters.”

The book of Jeremiah (3:31) mentions idolaters who “burn their sons and their daughters in the fire,” a practice referred to several times in the Hebrew Bible. Ziony Zevit argues that these passages refer to something other than child sacrifice. (Video, about 5 minutes.)
