The first European universities were religious institutions founded mainly under the auspices of the Catholic Church. But by the mid-20th century, religion had been pushed altogether to the margins. Yoram Hazony, speaking in honor of the philosopher Alvin Plantinga—who helped found the modern discipline of philosophy of religion—argues that believers can, openly as believers, can and should participate in scholarly endeavors. The relevance of their doing so, Hazony explains, goes far beyond the walls of the Ivory Tower. (Video, 13 minutes.)
