The effective altruists hunt for meaning and impurity.

Most cultures have some idea of giving alms to the needy. More often than not that idea is tied up with religion; even in secular America, attitudes about philanthropy tend to be rooted in Christian ideals of charity. But what if eleemosynary endeavors could be conducted on a purely rational, secular basis? This is the idea behind “effective altruism,” which became a popular Silicon Vally buzzword a few years ago.
