A Rare Tunnel, and Rarer Coin, Testify to the Last Hurrah of Jewish Sovereignty in Ancient Times

Around 132 CE—about half a century after the destruction of the Second Temple—the Jews of Judea again revolted against Roman rule, led by Simon Bar Kokhba. The rebels, using guerrilla tactics, had some initial success, regaining territory and minting their own coins, before being brutally crushed by a Roman expeditionary force. Emily Frances reports on a recent excavation near the village of Tekoa—about ten miles south of Jerusalem—that uncovered one of the caves used by Bar Kokhba’s forces, together with a very rare coin.
