A Nonbeliever Considers the Intellectual Values of Faith

An atheist crackup drives out the skeptics.

Recently, the Freedom from Religion Foundation—an organization devoted to “nontheism” and a draconian interpretation of the principle of separation of church and state—made clear that it has no room for anyone who believes male and female are fixed biological categories. Richard Dawkins and other prominent figures have in response resigned from its board. Based on her own experiences as a vocal leader of ex-Muslims, Sarah Haider finds the kerfuffle all too typical of what she calls “organized atheism.” Her reflections call to mind the quip, often attributed to G.K. Chesterton, that the danger of the decline of Christianity isn’t that people will believe nothing, but that they will believe everything:
