Born in Germany in 1923, Guenter Lewy escaped the Nazis to settle on a kibbutz in British-ruled Palestine in 1939. Three years later, he enlisted in the British army to join the fight against Hitler. He settled in the U.S. after World War II, where he became a distinguished historian and the author of numerous books.
