Everybody who knows the Bible knows that Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery in Egypt. But a close look at the relevant passage leads to a great deal of confusion: there are Midianites, Ishmaelites, and Medanites involved in the transaction, and it is hardly clear who sold Joseph to whom and in what order.
